How to Password Protect Excel File (Ms. Excel & WPS Spreadsheet)

The answer is simply yes, Microsoft Excel and other apps like WPS spreadsheet has inbuilt menu to password protect your excel file. There are also choice to fully protect your excel file and there are also choice to protect it partially.

Fully protect here means we need to enter the password even we only want to open the data and partially protect means we can open the data without password, we only need to enter password when will do any change in the data.

How to Password Protect Excel File (Ms. Excel)

  • Open your excel files with Ms. Excel
  • Choose File Menu
  • Click Save as
  • Click Tools 

  • Choose General Option, and you will see below menu

  • "password to open" > fill the box with password you want, but remember if you fill this password you will always need to enter password when opening the file, if you don't want it just leave it blank
  • "password to modify" > fill the box with password you want, you will need to enter password if you want to modify any data, you can leave it blank if you don't want it.
  • Finally just click OK

Your data are already protected with password now.

How to Password Protect Excel File (WPS Spreadsheet)

  • Open your excel files with WPS Spreadsheet
  • Choose "Menu" > Document Encryption > Encryption... 

     
  • There will be menu as below 

  • "Document password" > ill the box with password you want, but remember if you fill this password you will always need to enter password when opening the file, if you don't want it just leave it blank
  • "password to modify" > fill the box with password you want, you will need to enter password if you want to modify any data, you can leave it blank if you don't want it.
  • Finally just click OK.
